Fall and Winter in Santa Fe, NM

Every autumn when I close Cappaert Contemporary Gallery for the season, I wander out west to my home in Santa Fe, NM where I co-own MATERIALITY fine art and help out for the winter season.  This trip usually involves some side excursions and this year we ventured to Estes Park, CO and did some hiking in the Rocky Mountain National Park.  All of these little stops in life make me 'notice' and fill me up with inspiration.  My work is usually based on 'memory' of places I have been or seen.  Thus the importance of filling that memory bank with beauty!

As I have settled into my New Mexico studio I am slowly taking my time to 'shift' not only into more studio time but into the color palette that surrounds me.  I've already done some hiking in my nearby, Galisteo Basin Preserve, which is the inspiration for many, many paintings.  Because it is close to my home I find myself there often and at all times of the day.  The light is ever changing and the reflections and shadows that the light casts on the mountains is quite extraordinary.  Although I don't really paint 'mountains' it will come through in my paintings usually in the form of a 'softer' horizon line.

I have recently completed some smaller paintings from my series called "Colorsnaps". These are 8x8" and often are the beginnings of  what may become larger paintings.  I am having fun with it and that is truly what matters.  This series is exclusively available through MATERIALITY and you can visit their website to see them or for more info.

Meanwhile you will find me either hiking or in my studio and then often working the gallery on Saturdays and Sundays.  I am loving this sunshine and warm weather and all the energy it brings to my art practice.
